ORLANDO

DISNEY WOrld

Disney World is exactly what it promises — the crowds, the rides, the engineered scale of it. Everything is designed to make you forget you're in a theme park until you're too far in to care. The magic is part construction, part nostalgia. Worth it at any age.

Disney World occupies about 110 square kilometers — larger than San Francisco. The four parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom) are spread across a resort property that includes hotels, waterparks, retail, and two golf courses. Walt Disney acquired the land secretly in the 1960s, buying it as agricultural property under dummy corporations to prevent speculation. The resulting controlled environment is total: once inside the property, every visible detail has been designed.

Magic Kingdom is the one that most closely matches what people picture. Main Street USA runs from the entrance to Cinderella's Castle — a facade built at decreasing scale to create forced perspective, making the Castle appear taller than its 57 meters. The rides here are the originals: the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean. They're old enough now to read as design history.

EPCOT is the most interesting park and the least advertised. The original concept — an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow — was Walt Disney's vision of a functional planned city. What exists is a world fair theme park where national pavilions around a central lagoon represent eleven countries. The food and drink at each pavilion is accurate enough to be useful as an introduction. The international staff are actually from those countries.

Hollywood Studios' Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansion opened in 2019 and occupies about a third of the park. The Millennium Falcon ride is immersive: the ship feels physically larger than the exterior suggests, and the controls are responsive depending on how your group uses them. The theming throughout the land is complete, extending to signage in Aurebesh and no visible technology that breaks the setting.

Universal Studios sits outside the Disney property and operates on a different model — smaller, faster, less totalizing. The two parks are connected by CityWalk and the Hogwarts Express, which runs between the two Wizarding World sections. The Forbidden Journey ride in Hogsmeade is the original of its type and still holds up.

What stays: the detail. The obsessive, expensive, impossible-to-justify detail — food cart aging, hidden Mickey shapes embedded in tile and carpet throughout the resorts. It's not a subtle place, but it's a precise one.
